About Rubicon Programs Inc.
The mission of Rubicon Programs is to prepare very low-income people to achieve financial independence and to partner with people with mental illness on their journey of recovery.
Since 1973, Rubicon has provided employment, housing, mental health, and other supportive services to individuals who are very low-income, especially people who are homeless or have mental illness.
Based in Richmond, California, Rubicon Programs offers services throughout Contra Costa and Alameda counties. Our social purpose business, Rubicon Landscape, beautifies commercial and public grounds throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
Rubicon was established in 1973 in Richmond, California by community members concerned about the closure of state psychiatric hospitals. The founders recognized the need to develop local services for people disabled by chronic mental illness who were returning to the community. Although finding solutions for this major social issue was in itself an ambitious job to take on, Rubicon also took on the problems of poverty and homelessness.
Located in a community of great need and high unemployment, Rubicon expanded to include services for people who were homeless or otherwise very low income. Rubicon’s solution was to develop a comprehensive service approach that also offers affordable housing and social purpose businesses.
History
What's in a name?
The name Rubicon refers to the pivotal moment when Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon River in Italy in 49 BC, changing his life forever. Today, Rubicon Programs offers people the chance to cross their own personal Rubicon and transform their lives.
